No.2 Atlas Sound : Parallax (4AD)
My 10 year old Daughter always gets sad when we talk about Bradford Cox. She secretly loves the video/song combination of Deerhunter’s Helicopter. But we mentioned to her once that Bradford gets ill occasionally and she cant shake it. We can only play Atlas Sound/Deerhunter when she’s not around. The lines between the two bands are blurring for Cox, no more so than on Parallax. What always astounds with Cox is the high standard throughout, which is not always easy when combined with being prolific. Yes, touches of Glam (Mick Rock’s album cover picture gives a clue) mix with jangly guitars, ambient space and noise and glitch. But overall not so conventional. Cox still pushes boundaries and this sound finds no reference easy to attach. Essentially, Cox also understands the power of melody, which Parallax has in abundance. Cox remains the one true original of this time and beyond.
